Bremen (VBR). Postbank Employees Called to Strike by ver.di Union

The Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft (ver.di) union has announced a nationwide strike for Postbank employees, starting from Friday, February 16, 2024. This call to action follows disappointing initial tariff negotiations with the bank earlier this month. ver.di is demanding fair compensation for the challenges faced by Postbank employees, as the latest financial reports from the bank indicate that there is room for salary increases.

Jan Duscheck, the ver.di negotiator, highlighted the financial standing of the bank, stating that the available resources should be used to compensate for the real wage losses suffered by employees in recent years. He emphasized that Postbank employees are not among the highest earners in the industry. With the company’s positive financial performance, significant increases in living costs, and the announcement of numerous branch closures, ver.di has put forth specific demands. These include a salary increase of 15.5%, or at least 600 euros, a raise of 250 euros in apprentices‘ pay, and an extension of job protection until December 31, 2028.

Duscheck further emphasized the hard work performed by Postbank employees in consolidating the digitalization processes throughout the company last year. The union advocates for a respectable and fair contract agreement and expects the employers to present a negotiable offer.

The nationwide warning strikes will commence in Hamburg on Friday, February 16, 2024 and will be expanded to other states in the following days. Both branch locations and back-office units will be affected. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for February 26, 2024 in Frankfurt.

This strike by Postbank employees raises important questions about fair pay and job security within the banking industry. Ver.di’s demands not only address the financial well-being of Postbank employees but also reflect a larger societal concern regarding growing income disparities. The union’s call to action sheds light on the challenges faced by workers in an industry that has seen significant changes due to digitalization and cost-cutting measures.

The involvement of ver.di, a trusted and experienced trade union, adds weight to the grievances put forth by Postbank employees. The union has a strong track record in representing workers‘ interests and advocating for fair working conditions across various sectors.

As the strike begins, it remains to be seen how Postbank and its management will respond to these demands. The outcome of these negotiations will not only impact Postbank employees but may also set a precedent for the broader banking industry in terms of fair compensation and employee rights.
